In 2018, former president Muhammadu Buhari made a statement in London suggesting many young Nigerians “sit and do nothing” while expecting government benefits.
Although he didn’t directly call youths lazy, the comment was widely interpreted that way and sparked strong backlash, with many Nigerians arguing that unemployment and economic challenges—not laziness—were the real issues.
