Then came my name.
“Well, good morning…erm, what’s your name again?”

“Amanda. I’m the new transfer,” I smiled.

Oh yes! Amanda…but that’s not the name written here. How do you pronounce this?”

Since arriving in the United States, I had usually offered an easier alternative whenever someone stumbled. “Just call me Amanda,” I’d say. It made introductions smoother, for them and for me.
