The idea of a television station in Nigeria was first mooted the then Premier of Eastern Nigeria, Dr the Hon. Nnamdi Azikiwe, not Chief Obafemi Awolowo, according to Drum magazine.
Azikiwe mooted the idea in 1956 shortly before Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Nigeria. However , for some unrecorded reasons, this was not possible and so the Western Nigeria Government was first to go into action with the establishment of the WNTV.
