Islamic police in Nigeria’s northern state of Kano have arrested nine Muslims 4 eating publicly on the first day of Ramadan.The detainees — seven men and two women — claimed they were unaware Ramadan had begun. Kano, a majority-Muslim state, operates Sharia law alongside Nigeria’s secular legal system. During Ramadan, the Hisbah — the state’s Islamic enforcement body — patrols markets and restaurants to ensure Muslims observe the fast from sunrise to sunset.
