What Happens When Citizens’ Voices Are Suppressed
1. Democratic Legitimacy Erodes
Democracy runs on participation. When dissent is punished, critics are harassed, or media is restricted, the system becomes democratic in name only. Elections might still happen — but trust evaporates.
2. Public Trust Collapses
Once people feel unheard, they disengage. Civic participation drops. Voter turnout declines. People stop believing institutions work for them.
