Nagoya University (NU) recently developed “YORU,” which detects animal actions and decodes the underlying neural circuits that orchestrate them.NU relied on a biological technique called “Optogenetics,” which combines light with genetic engineering to precisely control the neural activity of male fruit flies. In simple terms, they shine light on male fruit flies to turn specific neurons on or off, acting like a dimmer switch for the roughly 200,000 brain cells that control flying, mating.
