The Western Wall is a remnant of the massive retaining wall that once surrounded the Second Jewish Temple, which stood on the Temple Mount over 2,000 years ago. When the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in 70 CE, the Temple was destroyed but this wall survived.

It is the holiest site where Jews can pray today
