China is aggressively pivoting toward photonic (optical) computing, exemplified by the "Taichi" chip architecture. Unlike traditional electronic chips that move electrons through silicon—generating heat and meeting physical resistance—optical chips use photons (light) to perform matrix multiplications. This shift offers a 1,000x improvement in energy efficiency and significantly higher processing speeds. Critically, optical chips can be manufactured using mature 180nm lithography processes.
