A nation may deceive itself for a time with statistics, ceremonies, and patriotic ritual; yet it cannot long escape the judgment of its young. When the ordinary boy or girl, standing at the threshold of life, looks upon their homeland and sees not a field of opportunity but a corridor of escape, be certain that something has gone gravely wrong. A country in which the average teenager aspires not to build, but to depart, is already deep in crisis, whether it chooses to acknowledge it or not.
