Islamic Teacher Lynched in Nasarawa After Unverified Child Abduction Allegation

A female Islamic teacher was brutally killed by a mob in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, after being accused of attempting to kidnap children, an allegation that family members and witnesses say was never proven.The victim, identified as Ustazah Ummulkhairi, had left her home in the New Mararaba area to attend a religious lecture at Madrasat Tashiyhul Iman, a school located in the old Mararaba area. She was eventually taken to a nearby police station where efforts were made by relatives and community leaders to establish her identity and challenge the allegation.According to family sources, representatives of her husband and respected scholars who knew her personally arrived at the police station and informed authorities that Ummulkhairi was a well-known Islamic teacher with no known history of criminal activity. They also maintained that there was no evidence to support the accusation against her.Despite these interventions, tensions reportedly continued to rise outside the police station. Family members alleged that police officers informed them they had been instructed to remove the woman from the station because of mounting pressure from the crowd and concerns over the worsening situation.Witnesses said the mob subsequently attacked the teacher in full public view. Religious scholars and family members reportedly pleaded with the youths to spare her life, insisting that the allegation against her had not been substantiated.Their appeals were unsuccessful.The mob allegedly beat Ummulkhairi to death before setting her body on fire. Witnesses also reported that a motorcycle belonging to one of the scholars present at the scene was burned alongside her remains.The killing has sparked outrage among relatives, religious leaders, and members of the community, many of whom questioned how such an act could occur despite the presence of security personnel and repeated appeals for calm.Family members described Ummulkhairi as a wife, mother, and respected teacher who dedicated much of her life to religious education.
